The ReMINDers

They say true love is a beautiful thing. True love that results in hip-hop is a beautiful thing with a great soundtrack. The Reminders have been making music for a while now, both individually and together. In 2005, Big Samir began performing with Aja Black around the midwest, sharing similar views on life, music and religion, they decided to come together form The ReMINDers.

The sound is best described as "soulful" awareness and positivity influence their lyrics, with a focus on harmonizing and bringing a message. After a two year break to raise their children, they are back with a powerful debut record "ReCollect" that will gain them a solid position in the music world.

Aja Black, born in Hollis Queens (New York), sings and raps on the record while Big Samir, born in Brussels (Belgium), occasionally flips back and forth from French to English with a dope bilingual flow. The Couple-Duo is very busy promoting positive vibes and great music for people of all ages in the world to enjoy.

Emicida

Between the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, the MCs’ battles that Emicida participated were circulating on the video websites, specially YouTube, faster than many advertising campaigns, putting the name of the (until then) unknown exterminator of MCs of the North part of São Paulo in the mind of all of those who were addicted to rhymes. The repercussion of the battles was so big that, when Emicida realized the exposure he had got, he decided that that was the moment to do something. In March, 2008, the first step was taken: a studio performance was registered to consolidate his name. Together with the musical producer Felipe Vassão, his first single, named “Triunfo”, was born.

With only 300 handmade copies produced for the release, Emicida watched his first single become the subject of the most important specialized blogs and get the same repercussion of the freestyle battles. After realizing that songs as “Ela Diz”, “Vai Ser Rimando” and “Sozim” were out and around before any official recording, the MC  decided to gather his songs created through the past 10 years and release a mixtape -- “Pra quem Já Mordeu Um Cachorro Por Comida, Até Que Eu Cheguei Longe…”--, which has reached the incredible mark of 10 thousand copies sold from hand to hand in only one year. This has made him the subject of the main Brazilian cultural medias.

For the release of his second mixtape, “Emicídio”, it was created a partnership between his own ‘trademark’, Laboratório Fantasma, and an important independent music festival circuit in Brazil named Fora do Eixo. “Fora do Eixo Discos” was created to distribute “Emicídio” – that has already reached the mark of 6 thousand copies sold, and 1 thousand of these copies were sold only in the first day!

Emicídio came out smoothtly. Quiet, as the look of the MC, but sure of where to get. With a free set of themes, wandering around unusual places in rap music and with its remarkable and precise rhymes. Emicida’s visceral way of singing (the main distinguishing mark of the MCs’ exterminator) is still there and gives the tonic to the new work of the artist that became a reference in the “do it yourself” in Brazil.

Amkoullel

His stage name is taken from a novel by one of Mali’s most noted authors - Amadou Hampaté Bâ – in order to pay homage to all African cultures.

Amkoullel was young when he discovered rap and in 1993 he organized his first rap concert before expanding his collaborations and creating the group Kouma Guerya – ‘guerilla of words’.

His first album, Infaculté, was released in 2002 and was loaded with texts against ignorance. In 2003, his second album, Surafin, meaning ‘bribe’, was released. But it was Waati Sera (‘It’s Time !’), self-produced under the label Woklo Barka Prod in 2007 that proved to be a militant opus against Africans’ disdainful self-image. Amkoullel creates musical collages from traditional African instruments, jazz and rock, arousing the attention of even the most refined audience.

Amkoullel has performed with icons such as Cheikh Tidiane Seck and appeared twice at the Nice Jazz Festival alongside Manu Dibango, Keziah Jones, Rokia Traoré and has presented alongside Alpha Blondy, Lobi Traoré and Tiken Jah Fakoly. Ne ka Mali ! is not only an invitation to discover Africa through the eyes of Amkoullel, but also a call into question the notions of ‘the other’. Rapping and flowing in French and Bambara, Amkoullel touches on vital social issues such as education and African unity. Accompanied by Didier Awadi, one of African Hip-hop’s fathers, and an illustrious compatriot Xuman, Amkoullel presents other regional performers such as The Tata Pound, Lassy King Massassy, Fanga Fing, Master Sumy ; and French spoken word artists RIM and CANDIIE.

Hip Hop without borders
Amkoullel founded the first Hip Hop school, the Farafina Club, and the Mali Hip Hop Association, AHM, which brings together artists, DJs, graffiti artists, and dancers. Amkoullel also is the host of Case Sanga, a heavily viewed Malian variety show, like America’s “American Idol”, which brings forth new talent and is presently gaining in popularity in francophone Africa.

In 2009, Amkoullel was honoured at the Mali Hip-Hop Awards three times, booked to headline at the Waga Hip Hop festival and to perform in one of the major Mexican festivals, and appearing on compilations by OIF and Afrolution. 2010 is the year of internationalization with a digital record label and the creation of the first Koterap musical BAMA SABA launched at the Avignon festival. The impact is such that various tours are now prepared for 2011…
