Sujatha Fernandes

Sujatha Fernandes is a professor at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is the author of the critically acclaimed books Cuba Represent! Cuban Arts, State Power, and the Making of New Revolutionary Cultures (Duke, 2006) and Who Can Stop the Drums? Urban Social Movements in Chávez’s Venezuela (Duke, 2010), and most recently, Close to the Edge: In Search of the Global Hip Hop Generation (Verso, 2012).
She has recently written an op-ed in the New York Times on the role of hip hop in the Arab Spring, and in the revolts in Africa:
